Playgrounds are a great place for kids not only to play but also to learn valuable skills and get out in the fresh air! With lots of new playgrounds popping up around our city we decided to have a look at what is out there for all our kids to access, thankfully lots of people in our community have done some of the hard work already and gathered together lists and reviews of all sorts of playgrounds! (Thank you internet!).

Buggy Buddys

Buggy Buddys is a free online guide for families. Under the ‘Things to Do’ section you can access a list of ‘All Abilities’ playgrounds. Each playground review generally has photos, description of the equipment/ activities available, parking, shade and facility availability.

Kids Around Perth

Another online family guide, under the ‘Things to Do’ section there are lists of playgrounds. Although they don’t have a specific ‘All Abilities’ list, you can begin to narrow your search down by North, South of the river, East/ hills, Mandurah or City Central. Each playground has a list of facilities and equipment available along with photos of the playground.

Access WA

Online guide to accessible places across WA. You can search by region, local government area, town/ suburb. Each listing gives a brief description, advises facility availability, closest accessible parking and has some pictures.

One of our speech pathologists got a nice surprise when she visited ‘Wireless Hill reserve‘ and nature playground in Ardross recently. They have installed some signs with some relevant key word signs on them to encourage communication while playing in the park.

Never one to miss out on the action, I checked out a couple playgrounds myself too!

Newly opened ‘Shipwreck Park’ in Sienna Wood, Hilbert has been designed to meet the needs of children of all abilities. Officially opening in early December 2017 this park is brand new! With a nautical theme the main play equipment structure is in the shape of a ship and has pathways right the way through it for those using a wheelchair, walker etc. You can get all the way to the top of the ship and look down on everyone from above, or talk to your shipmates down below deck through the sound tubes.

With multiple entry points into the park it is fully fenced with self-closing gates to keep all the fun inside the playground. Older kids? No worries, there is also an additional section of the park that has a basketball court, table tennis tables, seating area and BBQs.

The playground has 3 public toilets (1 that’s wheelchair accessible) and BBQs 1 of which is also wheelchair accessible, there is also a large car park with 6 ACROD parking bays. I’m also informed that there is planned to be a Café coming soon next to the playground. (Always a win for the parents!).

‘Piney Lakes Reserve Sensory Play Park’ playground has been in Winthrop for a while now but has undergone some upgrades. With paths throughout the playground and a very wide open feel you can access every area with a wheelchair, walker, stroller etc. The park includes an accessible swing with harness and mirror, lots of educational opportunities and a roundabout that can take a wheelchair. Keep in mind, there is a lake right next to the play area and is not fenced.
