Did You Know: What is Assistive Technology (AT)?

15 December 2022

Assistive Technology is a broad term that covers the assistive products, devices and programs that maintain or improve someone’s functioning and independence.

It also refers to supporting services such as occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech pathology that may be used to assess individuals and prescribe particular AT items.

Assistive technology can also include environmental design and home modifications, car modifications, or simply a different technique or way of doing a task.

AT can range from simple items, like a sock aid, to the more complex, such as a custom-built multi-functional powered wheelchair or a communication program that supports speech.

Aids, equipment, healthcare products or devices may be more familiar terms used to describe or refer to AT.

With 1 in 3 people around the world requiring assistive products, it’s clear assistive technology is for all abilities, and most likely that everyone will need AT at some point in their lives.
